Kunene is a beautiful and gentle young female desert-dwelling giraffe.
She is named after the region where she lives in northwest Namibia.
Just recently, Kunene has begun to venture beyond her familiar range, and now wanders further afield along the Hoanib River in search of food. Often, she is seen in herds of adult female giraffe, where she no doubt observes and learns the maternal skills that she will hopefully use in the future. Kunene and her fellow giraffes’ unique spot patterns (like your own fingerprints) help us to identify and keep track of them in the vast expanses of their desert home.
